Pinpoint Test G: The Heated Windshield Inoperative

  1. Refer to HEATED WINDOW for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    REFER to: Glass, Frames and Mechanisms - Vehicles With: SYNC 3/SYNC 3 Lite, Vehicles Without: SYNC - System Operation and Component Description .

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    HVAC B1097:12 Heated Windshield Relay: Circuit Short To Battery This DTC sets when the HVAC module detects a short to voltage on the LH heated windshield relay control circuit.
    HVAC B1097:14 Heated Windshield Relay: Circuit Short To Ground Or Open This DTC sets when the HVAC module detects a short to ground or an open on the LH heated windshield relay control circuit.
    HVAC B147C:12 Heated Windshield Relay 2: Circuit Short To Battery This DTC sets when the HVAC module detects a short to voltage on the RH heated windshield relay control circuit.
    HVAC B147C:14 Heated Windshield Relay 2: Circuit Short To Ground Or Open This DTC sets when the HVAC module detects a short to ground or an open on the RH heated windshield relay control circuit.

    Possible Sources 

    • Fuse
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Windshield glass
    • HVAC module
    • BJB

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Verify AJB fuse 61 (20A) is OK.
    • Verify BJB fuse 10 (300A), 20 (40A) and fuse 21 (40A) are OK.

  2. G1 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD GRID VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect: Heated Windshield Element C9069 (LH) and C9070 (RH).

    • Start the engine.

    • Activate the heated windshield switch.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:

      Ground

    Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  Inspect the heated windshield grid ground terminals and electrical connectors for damage. REPAIR the heated windshield grid ground circuit or INSTALL a new windshield glass as necessary. REFER to: Fixed Glass .
    No  If both voltage measurements failed, GO to  G2If only the LH measurement failed, VERIFY BJB 20 (40A) is OK. If OK, GO to  G4 If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. If only the RH measurement failed, VERIFY BJB 21 (40A) is OK. If OK, GO to  G4
    If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  3. G2 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD SWITCH PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION)

    • Start the engine.

    • Access the HVAC and monitor the CC_SW_H_F_WPID

    • Monitor the heated windshield switch PID while pressing and releasing the heated windshield switch.

    Does the PID agree with the heated windshield switch status? 

    Yes  GO to  G3
    No  GO to  G8
  4. G3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE HEATED WINDSHIELD RELAYS

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:

    Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  G9
    No  VERIFY BJB fuse 10 (300A) and AJB fuse 61 (20A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit in question. If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  5. G4 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G5
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  6. G5 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD RELAY CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit in question.
    No  GO to  G6
  7. G6 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD RELAY CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G7
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  8. G7 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD RELAY OPERATION

    • NOTE: If the jumper wire fuse blows when it is connected, refer to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short to voltage.

      Connect fused jumper wires:

    • Start the engine.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  REMOVE the fused jumper wires. GO to  G8
    No  REMOVE the fused jumper wires. GO to  G9
  9. G8 CHECK FOR CORRECT HVAC (HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING) MODULE OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all the HVAC module connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the HVAC module connectors and all previously disconnected rear window defrost system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. REFER to: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Control Module - Vehicles With: Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by poor connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  10. G9 CHECK FOR CORRECT BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) OPERATION

    • Inspect the BJB connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out-pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the BJB connectors and all other previously disconnected defrost system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new BJB.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by poor connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
