Pinpoint Test E: The Defrost System Is Inoperative

  1. Refer to HEATED WINDOW for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    REFER to: Glass, Frames and Mechanisms - Vehicles With: SYNC 3/SYNC 3 Lite, Vehicles Without: SYNC - System Operation and Component Description .

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    HVAC B1C83:12 Rear Defog Relay: Circuit Short To Battery This DTC sets when the HVAC module detects a short to voltage on the rear window defrost relay control circuit.
    HVAC B1C83:14 Rear Defog Relay: Circuit Short To Ground Or Open This DTC sets when the HVAC module detects a short to ground or an open in the rear window heater relay control circuit.

    Possible Sources 

    • Fuse
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Rear window defrost grid
    • Rear window glass
    • HVAC module
    • BJB

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Verify AJB fuse 4 (20A), 5 (20A) and fuse 61 (20A) are OK.
    • Verify BJB fuse 10 (300A) and fuse 12 (40A) are OK.
    • Inspect the rear window defrost grids and electrical connectors for damage.

  2. E1 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST GRID TERMINALS FOR DAMAGE

    • Inspect the rear window defrost grid terminals and electrical connectors for damage.

    Are the rear window defrost grid terminals OK? 

    Yes  GO to  E2
    No  REPAIR the rear window defrost grid terminal as necessary. REFER to: Lead Terminal Repair .
  3. E2 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST GRID VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect: Heater Rear Window Element C4425B (LH) and C4426B (RH).

    • Start the engine.

    • Activate the heater rear window switch.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:

      Ground

    Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  E3
    No  If both voltage measurements failed, VERIFY BJB fuse 12 (40A) is OK. If OK, GO to  E4
    If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. If only the LH measurement failed, VERIFY AJB fuse 5 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit for an open. If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. If only the RH measurement failed, VERIFY AJB fuse 4 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit for an open. If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  4. E3 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST GRID GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect: Heater Rear Window Element C4425A (LH) and C4426A (RH).

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:

      Ground

    Are the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new rear window glass. REFER to: Fixed Glass .
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  5. E4 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST SWITCH PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION)

    • Start the engine.

    • Access the HVAC and monitor the CC_SW_R_DEFPID

    • Monitor the rear window defrost switch PID while pressing and releasing the rear window defrost switch.

    Does the PID agree with the rear window defrost switch status? 

    Yes  GO to  E5
    No  GO to  E10
  6. E5 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  E6
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  7. E6 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:

    Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  E7
    No  VERIFY BJB fuse 10 (300A) and AJB fuse 61 (20A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit in question. If not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  8. E7 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW HEATER RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  E8
  9. E8 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW HEATER RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  E9
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  10. E9 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY OPERATION

    • NOTE: If the jumper wire fuse blows when it is connected, refer to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short to voltage.

      Connect a fused jumper wire:

    • Start the engine.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to  E10
    No  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to  E11
  11. E10 CHECK FOR CORRECT HVAC (HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING) MODULE OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all the HVAC module connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the HVAC module connectors and all previously disconnected rear window defrost system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. REFER to: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Control Module - Vehicles With: Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by poor connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  12. E11 CHECK FOR CORRECT BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) OPERATION

    • Inspect the BJB connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out-pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the BJB connectors and all other previously disconnected defrost system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new BJB.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by poor connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
