Engine Front Cover: Removal

NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE:
This procedure includes steps to lift
the engine. The special tools required to install the crankshaft seal and pulley cannot be installed with the engine in the installed position due to the location of the body front support.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting .
- Activate the brake service mode. Refer to: Brake Service Mode Activation and Deactivation .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

NOTE: Underbody shields vary by model.
- Loosen the bolts.
- Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

NOTE: If equipped.
- Loosen the bolts.
- Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.
- Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling .
- Remove the following items:
- Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
- Upper and lower CAC outlet pipe. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Outlet Pipe .

- Release the retaining clip and disconnect the radiator hose from the radiator.
- Detach the radiator hose retainer.
- Release the clamp and remove the radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the retaining clip and disconnect the radiator hose from the radiator.
- Detach the coolant hose retainers.

- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 5. Disconnect the coolant hoses. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Remove the radiator hose bracket nut.
- Release the clamp and remove the radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

- Release the clamp and position the degas hose aside. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clamp and disconnect the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 5. Disconnect the coolant hose and position the hose aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Release the clamp and position the coolant hose aside. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 5. Disconnect the coolant hose and position the hose aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Remove the nut and bracket.
- Remove the following items:
- LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .
- RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
- Cabin heater coolant pump. Refer to: Cabin Heater Coolant Pump - 2.7L EcoBoost (238kW/324PS) .

NOTE: It is not necessary to clamp off the oil cooler hoses with the cooling system drained.
Oil cooler. Refer to: Oil Cooler .
- EGR cooler. Refer to: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler .
- Coolant pump. Refer to: Coolant Pump .
- Accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner .
- Generator. Refer to: Generator - 2.7L EcoBoost (238kW/324PS) .
- LH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .

- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors.
- Remove the fasteners and position the A/C compressor aside.

- Remove the nuts and the EGR tube.
- Discard the gasket.

NOTE: If further disassembly of the engine will be performed, retain the original crankshaft pulley bolt for removing the crankshaft front seal, and if necessary, turning the crankshaft while the pulley is removed.
Remove and discard the crankshaft pulley bolt.

NOTE: Use a universal puller (such as an OTC 6667, or equivalent).
Using a universal puller, remove the crankshaft pulley.

NOTE: Use care not to damage the engine front cover or the crankshaft when removing the seal.
- Install the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Using the special tool, remove and discard the crankshaft front oil seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-409 (T92C-6700-CH) Remover, Crankshaft Seal.

NOTE: If further disassembly of the engine will be performed, retain the original crankshaft pulley bolt for turning the crankshaft while the pulley is removed.
Remove and discard the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Remove the bolts and the idler pulleys.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer.

- Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the stud bolt and ground wire.
- Remove the bolts and position the bracket aside.
- Remove the oil pan. Refer to: Oil Pan .

NOTE: There are different types of fasteners, note location of each fastener for assembly.
Remove the engine front cover fasteners.
- Using a large flat-bladed screwdriver and the indicated pry pads, release the sealer and remove the engine front cover. Use the General Equipment: Flat-Bladed Screwdriver
- Remove and discard the engine front cover gaskets.
- Remove and discard the oil gallery seal (6G068).
- Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation
