Engine Front Cover: Installation

  1. Install new engine front cover gaskets.

  2. NOTE: The engine oil gallery seal (6G068) is asymmetrical and must be installed exactly as shown or damage to the engine may occur.

    1. Lubricate the new oil gallery seal (6G068) with clean engine oil.
    2. Install the new oil gallery seal (6G068) with the squared edge toward the engine block.

  3. NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
    NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed within 10 minutes of applying the sealer and the bolts must be installed and tightened to 2-5 Nm (18-44 lb-in) within 15 of applying the sealer. Final tightening of the bolts must be completed within 60 minutes of applying the sealer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

    Apply 9 mm (0.35 in) beads of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone 10 mm (0.40 in) in length to the cylinder block skirt-to-cylinder block joints and the cylinder head-to-cylinder block joints as indicated.

  4. NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
    NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed within 10 minutes of applying the sealer and the bolts must be installed and tightened to 2-5 Nm (18-44 lb-in) within 15 of applying the sealer. Final tightening of the bolts must be completed within 60 minutes of applying the sealer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

    1. Apply a 4.5 mm (0.18 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the engine front cover sealing surfaces of the inner bolt bosses.

      Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

    2. Apply a 4.5 mm (0.18 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the chamfer of the engine front cover sealing surfaces.

      Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

    1. Install the engine front cover and install the fasteners finger tight.
    2. Tighten bolts 12 through 13.

      Torque: Stage 1: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm) | Stage 2: 45°

    3. Tighten bolts 1 through 11.

      Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) | Stage 2: 45°

    4. Tighten bolts 14 through 16.

      Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) | Stage 2: 60°

    5. Tighten bolts 15 through 20.

      Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) | Stage 2: 45°

  5. Install the oil pan. Refer to: Oil Pan .
  6. Position the bracket and install the bolts.

    Torque: 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) 2: 93 lb.in (10.5 Nm)

    1. Connect the wiring harness electrical connector.
    2. Install the ground wire and stud bolt.

      Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

    3. Attach the wiring harness retainers.

  8. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

    NOTE: Step 12 is for vehicles equipped with a sway bar. Steps 13 thru 15 are for vehicles equipped with a sway bar disconnect.
    • Remove the nuts and bolts and lower the sway bar.

    • Discard the nuts and bolts.

  10. Disconnect the sway bar disconnect wiring harness electrical connectors and retainers.

    • Remove the nuts and bolts and lower the sway bar disconnect.

    • Discard the bolts.

  11. Position the sway bar disconnect back so the front bracket holes are on the studs and install the original nuts finger tight to position the sway bar disconnect aside.

  12. Loosen the transmission mount nuts.

    • Position an adjustable stand under the rear of the engine/transmission. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

    • Using the adjustable stand, raise the engine 38 mm (1.5 in).

  13. Lubricate the engine front cover bore with clean engine oil.

  14. Using the special tools, install the new crankshaft front oil seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-335 (T88T-6701-A) Installer, Front Cover Oil Seal, 303-1531 Installer, Front Crank Seal and Damper.

  15. NOTE: The outer pulley must be removed to properly hold the pulley during the crankshaft bolt tightening step.

    Remove the bolts and the outer pulley,

  16. Lubricate the crankshaft pulley sealing surface with clean engine oil prior to installation.

  17. Using the special tools, install the crankshaft pulley. Use Special Service Tool: 303-335 (T88T-6701-A) Installer, Front Cover Oil Seal, 303-1531 Installer, Front Crank Seal and Damper.

  18. NOTE: Use a universal pulley holder (such as an OTC 4754, or equivalent).
    NOTE: The aid of an assistant is required to perform this step.

    Using a universal pulley holder, install and tighten a new crankshaft pulley bolt.

    Torque: Stage 1: 166 lb.ft (225 Nm) | Stage 2: Loosen: 360° | Stage 3: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm) | Stage 4: 270°

  19. Install the outer pulley and bolts,

    Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

    1. Using the adjustable stand, lower the engine to the installed position. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands
    2. Remove the stand.

  20. Remove and discard the transmission mount nuts.

  21. Install the new transmission mount nuts and tighten.

    Torque: 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

    NOTE: Steps 28 thru 30 are for vehicles with sway bar disconnect. Step 31 is for vehicles with a sway bar.
  22. Remove and discard the nuts and position the sway bar disconnect forward.

  23. Position the sway bar disconnect and install the new nuts and bolts.

    Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

  24. Connect the sway bar disconnect wiring harness electrical connectors and retainers.

  25. Position the sway bar and install the new nuts and bolts.

    Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

  26. NOTE: Only use hand tools when tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

    Install the new LH engine mount through bolt.

    Torque: 184 lb.ft (250 Nm)

    Install the new RH engine mount nuts.

    Torque: Stage 1: 81 lb.ft (110 Nm) | Stage 2: 120°

  28. Install the idler pulleys and bolts.

    Torque: 1: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm) 2: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm) 3: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    1. Install a new gasket.
    2. Install the EGR tube and the nuts.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  29. Remove the fasteners and position the A/C compressor aside.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    1. Connect the wiring harness electrical connectors.
    2. Attach the wiring harness retainers.

  30. Install the following items:

    1. LH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
    2. Accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner .
    3. Generator. Refer to: Generator - 2.7L EcoBoost (238kW/324PS) .
    4. Coolant pump. Refer to: Coolant Pump .
    5. EGR cooler. Refer to: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler .
    6. Oil cooler. Refer to: Oil Cooler .
    7. Cabin heater coolant pump. Refer to: Cabin Heater Coolant Pump - 2.7L EcoBoost (238kW/324PS) .
    8. RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
    9. LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .

  31. Install the bracket and nut.

    Torque: 93 lb.in (10.5 Nm)

    1. Install the degas hose and clamp. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Install the coolant hose and clamp. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    3. Follow directions to connect the quick release coupling type 5. Connect the coolant hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    4. Release the clamp and position the coolant hose aside. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    5. Follow directions to connect the quick release coupling type 5. Connect the coolant hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Install the radiator hose and clamp. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    • Install the radiator hose bracket nut.

      Torque: 93 lb.in (10.5 Nm)

    • Follow directions to connect the quick release coupling type 5. Connect the coolant hoses. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  34. Install the following items:

    1. Upper and lower CAC outlet pipe. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Outlet Pipe .
    2. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .

  35. Install a new engine oil filter, drain the engine oil and fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling .
  36. NOTE: If equipped.

    1. Install the underbody shield and the bolts.

      Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

    2. Tighten the bolts.

      Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  39. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  40. Deactivate the brake service mode. Refer to: Brake Service Mode Activation and Deactivation .
  41. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  42. Use the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Misfire Monitor Profile Correction routine in the diagnostic scan tool.
  43. Road test the vehicle.
