High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: Do not loosen any fittings or plugs on the high-pressure fuel pump.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
  5. Detach the harness retainers.

  6. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  7. Remove the retainers, then remove the high-pressure fuel pump shield.

  8. Disconnect the quick release couplings. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  9. Detach the wiring harness retainers. Disconnect the fuel supply quick connect coupling and the spring lock coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling . Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .

  10. Remove the retainers, then remove and the fuel supply manifold.

  11. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

    1. NOTE: To release the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel tube, wrap the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts with a shop towel to absorb any residual fuel pressure during the loosening of high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts.
    2. Disconnect the fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the fuel tube.

  12. Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump nuts one complete revolution at a time. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump nuts, then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.

  13. Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.

  14. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump tappet.

  15. Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet drive lobe. Install new components as needed.
