Since it is possible any one of multiple systems may be the cause of a symptom, it may be necessary to use a process of elimination type of diagnostic approach to pinpoint the responsible system.

Condition Actions
Clicking/whirring noise from transfer case at start up GO to Pinpoint Test U 
The transfer case makes noise Possible Sources:
Internal components or Fluid level 
GO to Pinpoint Test V 
Noise from the front axle REFER to: Front Drive Axle .
Noise from the rear axle REFER to: Electronic Locking Differential (ELD) . REFER to: Rear Drive Axle and Differential .
