Turbocharger RH: Installation

  1. If removed, install the turbocharger heat shield, then install and tighten the bolts.

  2. If needed, then install the turbocharger cooling tube rubber gasket, then lubricate with clean engine coolant. Refer to: LUBRICANTS, FLUIDS, SEALANTS AND ADHESIVES .

  3. If the turbocharger coolant supply tube was removed from the turbocharger, then install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the new O-ring seal with clean engine coolant. Refer to: LUBRICANTS, FLUIDS, SEALANTS AND ADHESIVES .

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. Install new components as needed.

      Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    2. If removed, install the turbocharger coolant supply tube to the turbocharger, then install and tighten the bolt.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  4. If removed, install and tighten the turbocharger exhaust flange studs.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  5. If removed, install and tighten the turbocharger mounting studs.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  6. Install the new turbocharger gasket.

  7. Install a new turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal, then lubricate with clean engine coolant. Refer to: LUBRICANTS, FLUIDS, SEALANTS AND ADHESIVES .

  8. Install the turbocharger coolant supply tube to the engine block while installing the turbocharger. Loosely install the turbocharger retainers. Tighten the turbocharger retainers in the following 3 stages, in the sequence shown.

    Torque:Tighten 1 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)Tighten 2 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)Tighten 3 to : 27 lb.ft (37 Nm)Re-tighten 1 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)Re-tighten 2 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)Re-tighten 3 to : 27 lb.ft (37 Nm)

  9. Install and tighten the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  10. Install the new turbocharger oil return tube gasket.

  11. Install a new O-ring seal, then lubricate with clean engine oil. Refer to: LUBRICANTS, FLUIDS, SEALERS AND ADHESIVES .

  13. Install the starter motor. Refer to: STARTER MOTOR .
  14. Connect the electrical connector, then attach the wire harness retainers.

  15. Install a new turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal, then lubricate with clean engine coolant. Refer to: LUBRICANTS, FLUIDS, SEALERS AND ADHESIVES

    2. Install the turbocharger coolant return tube to the turbocharger, then install and tighten the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  16. Install the new RH turbocharger exhaust flange gasket.

  17. NOTE: Make sure that a new gasket is installed.

    Install a new gasket.

  18. Install and evenly tighten the RH catalytic converter flange nuts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  19. Install and evenly tighten the RH turbocharger exhaust flange nuts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  20. NOTE: A new turbocharger oil supply tube filter must be installed. Failure to install a new filter will cause turbocharger failure.
    NOTE: Left side shown, right side is similar.

    Install the new turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.

      Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old seal residue, use brake cleaner to rinse the seal residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger bore and the turbocharger tube to engine bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. Install new components as needed.

      Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    2. Install the new the seals. Lubricate the inner seal surface with clean engine oil. Refer to: LUBRICANTS, FLUIDS, SEALERS AND ADHESIVES .

  21. NOTE: When installing the turbocharger oil supply tube into the engine block, use care not to damage the new turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush; damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old seal residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the seal residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger seal bore and the turbocharger tube to engine seal bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. Install new components as needed.

      Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    2. Install the turbocharger oil supply tube, then install and tighten the turbocharger oil supply tube bolts.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  22. Install the turbocharger outlet pipe RH. Refer to: TURBOCHARGER OUTLET PIPE RH .
  23. Install the air cleaner. Refer to: AIR CLEANER .
  24. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe RH. Refer to: AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE RH .
  25. NOTE: This step is only necessary for right-hand drive vehicles.

    Install the steering column lower shaft. Refer to: STEERING COLUMN LOWER SHAFT .

  26. Install the front fender splash shield. Refer to: FENDER SPLASH SHIELD .
  27. If equipped, install the engine front undershield. Refer to: ENGINE FRONT UNDERSHIELD .
  28. If equipped, install the engine rear undershield. Refer to: ENGINE REAR UNDERSHIELD .
  29. Check and top off the engine oil level as needed. Refer to: LUBRICANTS, FLUIDS, SEALERS AND ADHESIVES
  30. Fill the cooling system. Refer to: ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, VACUUM FILLING AND BLEEDING .
  31. Start and check for leaks.
  32. Road test the vehicle.
