Starter Motor: Removal

WARNING:
Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE:

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Open the starter solenoid terminal cover.

- Remove the starter solenoid terminal nut and position the wires aside.
Torque
: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)
- Remove the starter solenoid terminal nut and position the wires aside.
Torque
: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)
- Remove the starter solenoid terminal nut and position the wires aside.

- Remove the wiring harness retainers.
Torque
: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
- Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the harness aside.
- Remove the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the starter motor mounting bolts, position the ground wire aside and remove the starter motor.
Torque
: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)
- Inspect the starter motor drive gear and the flywheel ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection .
