Turbocharger LH: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: When removing any turbocharger air intake system components, make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. All components need to be inspected and cleaned prior to installation or reassembly.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
    • Disconnect the turbocharger inlet tube and the turbocharger outlet tube at the turbocharger and position them aside.

    1. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  3. Remove the engine crossmember. Refer to: Engine Crossmember .
  4. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove and discard the right catalytic converter flange nuts.

    1. Remove and discard the left catalytic converter flange nuts. Position the catalytic converter y-pipe down and back out of the way.
    2. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

      Remove and discard the gasket.

  5. NOTE: Use a commercially available, 22930 3/8" Jiffy-Tite® low profile disconnect tool, close the tool around the tube, press the tool into the fitting and rotate until the tool is fully seated into the fitting.

    Disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube at the turbocharger and position the turbocharger coolant return tube up out of the way.

  6. Disconnect the turbocharger wastegate hose.

  7. Position the cover aside and disconnect the electrical connector from the oil pressure switch.

  8. Remove the bolt for the turbocharger coolant supply tube and the turbocharger oil feed tube.

  9. Remove the upper turbocharger oil tube manifold assembly bolts at the turbocharger oil tube manifold assembly.

  10. Remove and discard the upper turbocharger oil tube assembly gasket.

    1. NOTE: Use a commercially available tool such as a MAC® XT50BS T50 TORX® bit socket or equivalent.
      NOTE: Use a commercially available tool such a Pittsburg® 67011 9/16" hex to 3/8" square drive adapter or equivalent.

      Using the TORX® bit socket, the drive adapter and a 9/16" box end wrench, remove and discard the turbocharger fastener.

    2. Remove and discard the turbocharger fasteners, remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the block fitting while removing the turbocharger and position the turbocharger aside.

  11. NOTE: Use a commercially available, 22930 3/8" Jiffy-Tite® low profile disconnect tool, close the tool around the tube, press the tool into the fitting and rotate until the tool is fully seated into the fitting.

    Disconnect the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the turbocharger fitting and remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube. Remove the turbocharger.

  12. Remove and discard the turbocharger gasket.

  13. Remove the turbocharger exhaust flange stud bolts if they need to be removed.

  14. Remove the lower turbocharger oil manifold assembly bolt and the turbocharger oil manifold assembly.

  15. Remove and discard the turbocharger oil manifold assembly O-ring seal and gasket.

  16. NOTE: Whenever the turbocharger is removed or replaced, always install a new turbocharger fitting and oil filter assembly.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger fitting and oil filter assembly.
