Exhaust Manifold LH: Removal

All vehicles 

NOTE: Vehicles with cast iron exhaust manifolds have 8 studs. Vehicles with stainless steel exhaust manifolds have 9 studs.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the LH turbocharger. Refer to: Turbocharger LH .

    Vehicles with cast iron exhaust manifold 

    • Remove and discard the nuts.

    • Remove the exhaust manifold.

  3. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket and studs.

    Vehicles with stainless steel exhaust manifold 

    • Remove and discard the nuts.

    • Remove the exhaust manifold.

  4. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket and studs.

    All vehicles 

    • NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These may cause scratches and gouges resulting in leak paths. Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surfaces.

      Clean the exhaust manifold mating surface of the cylinder head with metal cleaner. Follow the directions on the packaging.

      Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B

  5. This step is only necessary if the original cast iron exhaust manifold is being replaced by a stainless steel exhaust manifold. Using a bottoming tap, clean the threads of the stud holes that were not used for the original exhaust manifold.
