Pinpoint Test Aa: The Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning Indicator Is Never Or Always On (2.0L Or 2.5L Engine)

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
See Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning Indicator. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .
If the oil pressure warning indicator request message is missing less than 5 seconds, the IPC defaults the low engine oil pressure warning indicator to the last state (on or off), based upon the last message received.
If the oil pressure warning indicator request message is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC defaults the low engine oil pressure warning indicator on.

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Engine oil pressure switch
- Engine oil pressure concern
- GWM
- PCM
- IPC
Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
- Inspect the engine oil level.
- Inspect the engine for noise or other symptom that indicates a low engine oil pressure concern.
- Inspect the engine oil pressure switch for signs of external damage.
- Inspect the engine oil pressure switch connector for signs of corrosion and inspect the harness for damage indicating a cut, open or circuit shorted to ground.
- NOTE: If equipped with stop-start, while the vehicle is at a stop and the engine shuts off, the engine oil pressure gauge drops to 0 and the low oil pressure warning indicator turns off.
- AA1 CARRY OUT THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
- Select the IPC low oil pressure warning indicator (OIL_P_LOW) PID.
- Command low oil pressure warning indicator on then off while observing the low oil pressure warning indicator.
Does the low oil pressure warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes GO to AA2 No INSTALL a new IPC. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - AA2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform a IPC self-test.
Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?
Yes REFER to DTC Chart: IPC . No If the low engine oil pressure warning indicator is never on, GO to AA3 If the low engine oil pressure warning indicator is always on, GO to AA6 - AA3 CHECK FOR A STUCK CLOSED ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1657 (2.0L GDI) or C103 (2.5L).
- Ignition ON.
- Observe the low oil pressure warning indicator.
Does the low oil pressure warning indicator turn on?
Yes INSTALL a new engine oil pressure switch. Refer to the appropriate Engine article for the procedure. No GO to AA4 - AA4 CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect PCM C1915E (2.0L GDI) or C175E (2.5L).
- Measure:
2.0L GDI
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1915E-9 Ground 2.5L
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C175E-25 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to AA5 No REPAIR the circuit. - AA5 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) KOEO (KEY ON, ENGINE OFF) SELF-TEST
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform a PCM KOEO self-test.
Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?
Yes REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article . No GO to AA9 - AA6 CHECK FOR A STUCK OPEN ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1657 (2.0L GDI) or C103 (2.5L).
- Connect a fused jumper wire:
2.0L GDI
Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2 C1657-1 Ground 2.5L
Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2 C103-1 Ground
- Start the engine.
- Observe the low engine oil pressure warning indicator.
Does the low engine oil pressure indicator turn off?
Yes REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to AA7 No LEAVE the fused jumper wire connected. GO to AA8 - AA7 CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE
- Test the engine for low oil pressure.
Was a low engine oil pressure concern detected?
Yes REPAIR the low engine oil pressure concern. Refer to the appropriate Engine article for the procedure. No INSTALL a new engine oil pressure switch. Refer to the appropriate Engine article for the procedure. - AA8 CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect PCM C1915E (2.0L GDI) or C175E (2.5L).
- Measure:
2.0L GDI
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1915E-9 C1657-1 2.5L
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C175E-25 C103-1
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to AA9 No REMOVE the fused jumper wire. REPAIR the circuit. - AA9 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect all PCM connectors.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the PCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
