Valve Cover LH: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, GT engine is depicted in graphics, Mach 1 engine is similar.

All vehicles 

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release
  2. Disconnect the battery ground and positive cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect
  3. Remove the cowl grille panel. Refer to: Cowl Panel Grille
    1. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
    2. If equipped, remove and discard the nuts and remove the strut tower cross brace.

  4. If equipped, remove the fasteners and the cowl extension.

    GT 

  5. Remove the engine appearance cover caps.

  6. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover.

    Remove the nuts and the engine appearance cover.

  7. Remove the following items:

    1. Air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe
    2. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner
    3. Intake air resonator outlet pipe. Refer to: Intake Air Resonator Outlet Pipe

  8. Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

  9. Disconnect the quick release coupling and detach the retainer. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

    Mach 1 

    1. Remove the nuts and the heater hose support.
    2. Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
    3. Disconnect the quick release coupling and detach the retainer. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

    All vehicles 

  10. Disconnect the fuel supply tube quick release coupling and position the fuel supply tube aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

  11. Remove the LH ignition coils. Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug
    1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the harness aside.

    1. Remove the oil level indicator.
    2. Depress the tab.
    3. Rotate the oil level indicator tube counterclockwise.
    4. Pull the oil level indicator tube from the engine.

  12. Loosen the bolts, the stud bolts and remove the valve cover.

  13. NOTE: Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.

    Remove and discard the gasket.

  14. Inspect the VCT variable force solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals using the special tools. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone.

  15. Inspect the spark plug seals. Remove any damaged seals using the special tools. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.

  16. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation
