Timing Chain Tensioner: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

RH and LH timing chain tensioners 

  1. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to: Engine Front Cover

  2. NOTE: The timing chain must remain in its original position on the VCT unit using the scribed marks, or damage to valves and pistons will result.

    Scribe a location mark on the RH timing chain and the VCT unit.

  3. NOTE: The timing chain must remain in its original position on the crankshaft sprocket using the scribed marks, or damage to valves and pistons will result.

    Scribe a location mark on the RH timing chain and the crankshaft sprocket assembly.

  4. Remove the bolts and the RH primary timing chain tensioner.

    LH timing chain tensioner 

  5. NOTE: The timing chain must remain in its original position on the VCT unit using the scribed marks, or damage to valves and pistons will result.

    Scribe a location mark on the LH timing chain and the VCT unit.

  7. Remove the bolts and the LH primary timing chain tensioner.
