Engine Front Cover: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release
  3. Disconnect the battery ground and positive cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect
  4. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding
  5. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Degas Bottle
    2. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe
    3. Refer to: Air Cleaner
    4. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal 
    5. Refer to: Valve Cover RH 
    6. Refer to: Valve Cover LH 

  6. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator assembly.

  7. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing assembly.

    1. Disconnect the heater hose.
    2. Release the clamp and remove the degas bottle coolant hose.
    3. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
    4. Release the clamp and remove the upper radiator hose T-connector/thermostat housing assembly.

  8. Remove and discard the thermostat housing O-ring seal.

    1. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
    2. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
    3. Remove the fasteners and position the generator aside.

  9. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump.

  10. Remove and discard the coolant pump O-ring seal.

  11. NOTE: GT vehicles are equipped with a subframe bracket and underbody shield assembly.

    If equipped, remove the bolts and the subframe bracket and underbody shield assembly.

  12. Remove the nut and position the wiring harness bracket aside.

  13. Remove the bolts and stud bolts.

  15. Remove the engine front cover from the front cover-to-cylinder block dowels.

  16. Remove and discard the gaskets.

  17. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation
