Pinpoint Test P : An Individual Button/Feature Is Inoperative From The RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) Transmitter

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    REFER to: Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems - Overview .

    Possible Sources 

    • Door lock system concern
    • Liftgate latch release system concern
    • Power liftgate system concern
    • Horn system concern
    • Turn signal system concern
    • Remote start system concern
    • Key/key fob

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Inspect the key/key fob for damage.

  2. P1 VERIFY THE DOOR LOCK OPERATION

    • Press the lock and unlock button on the door lock control switch while observing the door lock operation.

    Do the door locks operate? 

    Yes  GO to  P2
    No  REFER to the Symptom Chart: Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems - Electrical .
  3. P2 VERIFY THE HORN OPERATION USING THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION) (HORN_RELAY)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the BCM Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • Select the BCM horn PID (HORN_RELAY) and active command the horn on then off.

    Does the horn sound when commanded on? 

    Yes  GO to  P3
    No  REFER to: Horn .
  4. P3 VERIFY THE HAZARD LAMP OPERATION

    • Activate the hazard lamp function.

    Do the hazard lamps operate correctly? 

    Yes  GO to  P4
    No  REFER to: Turn Signal and Hazard Lamps .
  5. P4 VERIFY THE LIFTGATE LATCH RELEASE OPERATION

    • Ignition ON.

    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.

    • NOTE: The liftgate release button on the liftgate must be pressed within 45 seconds of pressing the liftgate release enable button on the overhead console.

      For police vehicles, press the liftgate release enable button located on the overhead console.

    • Press the liftgate release button located at the rear of the vehicle.

    Does the liftgate latch release (manual liftgate) or the liftgate power open (power liftgate)? 

    Yes  GO to  P5
    No  For a manual liftgate, GO to Pinpoint Test M  For a power liftgate, REFER to: Body Closures .
  6. P5 CHECK THE LOCK AND UNLOCK BUTTONS

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Press the lock and then unlock button on the suspect key/key fob.

    Do the doors lock and unlock? 

    Yes  GO to  P6
    No  REPLACE the suspect key/key fob. PROGRAM the new key. For an IKT or a key fob, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . For a passive key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool .
  7. P6 CHECK THE LIFTGATE BUTTON

    • Press the liftgate button twice on the suspect key/key fob.

      • For vehicles with a manual liftgate, press the liftgate release button located on the liftgate within 45 seconds of pressing the button on the RKE transmitter.

    Does the liftgate latch release (manual liftgate) or the power open (power liftgate)? 

    Yes  If not equipped with a panic alarm/vehicle locator button, REPLACE the suspect key/key fob. PROGRAM the new key. REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . If equipped with a panic alarm/vehicle locator button, GO to  P7
    No  REPLACE the suspect key. PROGRAM the new key. For an IKT or a key fob, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . For a passive key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool .
  8. P7 CHECK THE PANIC ALARM/VEHICLE LOCATOR BUTTON

    • Press the panic alarm/vehicle locator on the suspect passive key.

    Do the exterior lamps flash and the horn sound? 

    Yes  If not equipped with factory remote start, REPLACE the suspect key/key fob. PROGRAM the new key. For an IKT or a key fob, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . For a passive key, REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool . If equipped with factory remote start, GO to  P8
    No  REPLACE the suspect key. PROGRAM the new key. REFER to: Anti-Theft Key Programming - Scan Tool .
  9. P8 VERIFY THE REMOTE START OPERATION

    • Close all the doors, the hood and the liftgate.

    • NOTE: Each button press must be done within 3 seconds of each other.

      From outside the vehicle using the key:

      • Press the door lock button.
      • Press the remote start button twice.

    Does the vehicle remotely start? 

    Yes  The RKE transmitter is operating correctly. INFORM the customer of the RKE transmitter operation.
