Inspection and Verification

Diagnostics in this service information assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods .

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Record any cooling system DTC retrieved. Refer to the appropriate PCM DTC chart in this service information for DTC descriptions.
  3. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

    Visual Inspection Chart 

    Mechanical
    Damaged SOBDMC/ TCM coolant pump
    Damaged SOBDMC/ TCM radiator
    Improper connection of coolant hoses to coolant expansion tank
    Improper connection of coolant hoses to SOBDMC/ TCM
    Broken, damaged or kinked SOBDMC/ TCM coolant hoses
    Damaged SOBDMC/ TCM coolant expansion tank
    SOBDMC/ TCM coolant leaks
  4. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step
  5. If the cause is not visually evident and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) associated with SOBDMC/ TCM cooling are retrieved, verify the symptom and refer to Symptom Chart .
