Transmission - 2.3L EcoBoost (201kW/273PS): Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground. Refer to: Battery Disconnect And Connect .
  3. Remove the HO2S from the catalytic converter. Refer to: Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) .
    1. Remove pin-type retainer.
    2. Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

  5. Remove the bolts.

    • Remove the retainers.

    • Remove the push pins and the engine rear shield.

  8. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
    NOTE: Note the location of the bolts and studbolts for assembly.

    Remove the bolts, studbolts and the transmission fluid pan.

  9. NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan and the bolts.

  10. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove the bolt.

  11. Remove the bolt, nuts and position aside the transmission fluid cooler.

  12. Position aside the park manual release cable.

    1. Disconnect the rod from the manual control lever.
    2. Remove and discard the bolts and position aside the cable assembly.

  13. Support the front of the engine with a jack stand and block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  14. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack and wooden blocks, support the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack, Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  15. Remove the front driveshaft assembly. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  16. NOTE: Take extra care not to damage the component.

    Position and support the driveshaft aside.

    1. Mark the driveshaft flex coupling to the transmission flange.
    2. Remove and discard the driveshaft flex coupling to transmission flange bolts.
    3. Separate the flex coupling from the transfer case / transmission flange.

  17. Remove the transmission support insulator. Refer to: Transmission Support Insulator .

    All vehicles 

  18. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter .
  19. NOTE: Do not pull on the wire harness to disconnect/connect the connector or damage to the connector/wire harness will occur.

    1. Slide the safety lock out.
    2. Press the connector tab in.
    3. Rotate the locking arm up and disconnect the transmission electrical connector.

  20. Disconnect the wiring harness connector, wiring harness retainer and position aside the harness.

  23. Remove the starter studbolts and position aside the starter motor.

  25. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction.
    NOTE: Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

  26. Disconnect the transmission vent tube.

      View  Loosen the lower bellhousing bolt and studbolt far enough to be used as guide pins.

    2. Loosen the upper bell housing bolt and move the transmission rearward. While moving the transmission rearward, continue to loosen the upper bellhousing bolt until the bolt is removed from the bellhousing.

    • Remove the lower bellhousing bolt and studbolt.

  31. Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool and remove the transmission from the vehicle. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  32. NOTE: If installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, remove the transmission support bracket.

    If necessary, remove the bolts and the transmission support bracket.

    All vehicles 

  33. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning procedure. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
