Valve Cover LH: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Remove the bolts and the suspension support bar.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the LH air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
    2. Remove the throttle body. Refer to: Throttle Body .

    1. Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the EVAP tube.
    2. Disconnect the crankcase pressure sensor electrical connector.
    3. Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the crankcase vent tube.

    • Remove the coolant pipe bracket retaining bolts.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    • Remove the intake manifold bracket retaining bolts.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  3. Remove the oil level indicator.

  4. If equipped, disconnect the vacuum tube quick release coupling.

  5. Remove the LH ignition coil-on-plugs. Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug .
    1. Remove the bolt and the ground wire.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    2. Lift up the insulator.
    3. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors.
    4. Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness aside.

    1. Release the clamp and disconnect the vacuum tube.
    2. Remove the vacuum solenoid bolts.

      Torque: 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

    3. Detach the retainers and position the vacuum tube aside.

  6. Loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.

    1. Remove and discard the gaskets.
    2. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.

  7. Inspect the spark plug seals. Remove any damaged seals using the special tools. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle, 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.

  8. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old Sealant.

    Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head and engine front cover. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation . Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper

    Material: Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket Remover / ZC-30-A

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep wipes / ZC-31-B

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B
