    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The PCM monitors transmission temperature and if it exceeds normal operating temperatures it sets a DTC. It may even limit powertrain torque to prevent damage to the transmission.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P0218:00 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Over Temperature Condition: No Sub Type Information Sets in continuous memory and during the on-demand self-test when the PCM detects a transmission overheating concern and may limit torque to prevent critical transmission overheating. The DTC P0218 may set in conjunction with DTC P1783.
    PCM P1783:00 Transmission Overtemperature Condition: No Sub Type Information Sets in continuous memory and during the on-demand self-test when the PCM detects a transmission overheating concern and may limit torque to prevent critical transmission overheating. The DTC P0218 may set in conjunction with DTC P1783.

    Possible Sources 

    • Transmission overheating concern

  2. J1 RECHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Ignition ON.

    • NOTE: P0218 causes the powertrain to limit torque to prevent transmission overheating. DTC P0218 may set in conjunction with DTC P1783.

      Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the DTCs for the PCM.

    • Road test the vehicle.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the PCM self-test.

    Are DTCs P0218, P1783 still present? 

    Yes  If DTC P0218 or P1783 returns, REFER to: Transmission Cooling .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to an extreme driving conditions.
