Pinpoint Test A: Clutch Slippage
- Possible Sources
- Clutch master cylinder
- Clutch slave cylinder
- Clutch pressure plate
- Clutch disc
- Engine or transmission housing oil or fluid leak(s)
- A1 TEST CLUTCH SLIPPAGE
- Lock the wheels and apply the parking brake.
- Start the engine and engage fourth gear.
- Run the engine at approximately 2000 rpm.
- Release the clutch pedal slowly.
Does the engine stall when the clutch pedal is fully released?
Yes Clutch OK. No GO to A2 - A2 CHECK THE CLUTCH PEDAL OPERATION
- Check the clutch pedal position to determine if the pedal is returning to it's correct position when released.
- Gently pull the clutch pedal up using one finger to make sure the pedal has reached the correct position.
Is the clutch pedal sticking either permanently or intermittently?
Yes GO to A4 No GO to A3 - A3 CHECK PEDAL OBSTRUCTION CHECK
- Is there any obstruction to pedal box (such as floor mat touching the pedal arm, etc).
Does the pedal return to the initial position?
Yes Remove the obstruction. Did this fix the concern? Yes TEST the system for normal operation. No GO to A4 - A4 BLEED THE CLUTCH SYSTEM
- Bleed the clutch system. REFER to: Clutch System Bleeding .
Does the pedal return to the initial position after bleeding the clutch system?
Yes Validate that the problem is fixed. REPEAT GO to A1 No GO to A7 - A5 CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER VISUAL CHECK
- Inspect for hydraulic fluid on floor or damage to the push rod.
Is there any leakage or damage to the master cylinder found?
Yes INSTALL a new clutch master cylinder. REFER to: Clutch Master Cylinder . TEST the system for normal operation. No GO to A6 - A6 CLUTCH LINE AND ADAPTER LEAK CHECK
- CHECK for any leaks at the connections of clutch lines.
Is there any leaks?
Yes REPLACE the leaking line or part. No GO to A7 - A7 CHECK THE CLUTCH DISC AND PRESSURE PLATE
- Remove the clutch disc and pressure plate. REFER to: Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate .
Is the clutch disc or pressure plate contaminated with oil or hydraulic fluid?
Is the clutch disc worn (minimum thickness requirement - 6.55mm)?
Is there any damage to the clutch disc (such as broken spring, damaged spline)?
Is there any damage to the clutch pressure plate (such as broken component, excessive wear on the fingers)?
Yes VISUALLY INSPECT the transmission flange and the clutch slave cylinder mount leaks. CHECK the engine and transmission for leaks. INSTALL new components as necessary. INSTALL a new clutch disc and pressure plate. REFER to: Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate . TEST the system for normal operation. No GO to A8 - A8 CHECK THE CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER
- CHECK if there is any damage to the clutch slave cylinder (such as leakage, broken spring or jammed bearing)
Is the clutch slave cylinder leaking or show signs of damage?
Yes INSTALL a new clutch slave cylinder. REFER to: Clutch Slave Cylinder . TEST the system for normal operation. No TEST the system for normal operation.
