Starter Motor: Removal

WARNING: Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
Remove the LH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
Remove the steering column lower shaft. Refer to: Steering Column Lower Shaft .
Remove the ground wire bolt from the LH side of block and position aside the wiring harness.
Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

NOTE: Make sure the block heater wiring is routed and secured away from rotating or hot components.

Disconnect the block heater electrical connector and wiring harness retainers.

- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Position aside the wiring harness.

- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Position the wiring harness aside.

1. Remove the cover, then remove the nut.
  Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)
2. Disconnect the electrical connector and retainer.

Remove the starter motor bracket nuts then remove the bracket.
Torque: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

Remove the starter motor studbolts, then remove the starter motor.
Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

Inspect the starter motor drive gear and the flexplate or flywheel ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection .
