Brake Pedal and Bracket: Removal

NOTE: Do not service the brake pedal or brake booster without first removing the stoplamp switch. This switch must be removed with the brake pedal in the at-rest position. The switch plunger must be compressed for the switch to rotate in the bracket. Attempting to remove the switch when the plunger is extended (during pedal apply) will result in damage to the switch.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Remove the cowl panel grille. Refer to: Cowl Panel Grille .
  2. Remove the LH side (under hood) instrument panel bolt.

    Torque

    : 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  3. Release the clips and remove the LH instrument panel trim cover.

  4. Pull outward on the steering column opening cover detaching the clips and disconnect the electrical connectors.

  5. Remove the push pins and trim panel.

  6. Position the manual steering column adjuster lever in the down position.

  7. Remove the bolts and the lower steering column shroud.

    Torque

    : 19 lb.in (2.2 Nm)

  8. Remove the LH instrument panel bolts, and pull the left side of the instrument panel rearward to get access to the brake pedal.

    Torque:

    Torque 1: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

    Torque 2: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Do not service the brake pedal or brake booster without first removing the stoplamp switch. The switch must be removed with the brake pedal in the at-rest position.     Remove the stoplamp switch. Refer to: Stoplamp Switch .

  10. Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness aside.

  11. Remove the brake pedal bolt, and disconnect the brake booster push rod from the brake pedal arm.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  12. NOTE: Have an assistant to pull the HCU away from the cowl enough to allow the brake pedal bracket to clear the studs.

    • Pull the LH side of the instrument panel away from the cowl slightly.

    • Remove nuts and the brake pedal and bracket.
