Turbocharger RH: Removal

NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant lines, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the lines to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
  1. If equipped, remove the engine rear undershield. Refer to: Engine Rear Undershield .
  2. If equipped, remove the engine front undershield. Refer to: Engine Front Undershield .
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  4. Remove the left and the right front fender splash shields. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe RH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe RH .
  6. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
  7. Remove the turbocharger outlet pipe RH. Refer to: Turbocharger Outlet Pipe RH .
  8. Detach the hose retainer and move the hose out of the way.

  9. Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube bolts, then remove the turbocharger oil supply tube.

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    2. Remove and discard the O-ring seals and the turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.

  15. Remove the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube from the turbocharger and position it out of the way.

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    2. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

  17. Detach the wire harness retainers, then disconnect the electrical connector.

  18. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  19. Remove the turbocharger oil return tube bolts, then remove the tube.

      Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    2. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    3. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

  22. Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.

    1. Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the engine block while removing the turbocharger.
    2. Remove the turbocharger retainers, then remove the turbocharger.

      If Removed, inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    2. If the turbocharger coolant supply tube was removed from the turbocharger, then remove and discard the O-ring seal.

  30. NOTE: If the 2 piece turbocharger cooling tubes are separated or the rubber gasket is leaking, then the rubber gasket must be replaced.

    If needed, then remove and discard the rubber gasket.

    If needed, inspect and clean the turbocharger cooling tube sealing surfaces, using brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.
