Turbocharger LH: Removal

NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant tubes, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the tubes to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
  1. If equipped, remove the engine rear undershield. Refer to: Engine Rear Undershield .
  2. If equipped, remove the engine front undershield. Refer to: Engine Front Undershield .
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  4. Remove the left and the right front fender splash shields. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
  6. Remove the turbocharger outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Turbocharger Outlet Pipe LH .
  7. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise, then position the accessory drive belt off the air conditioning compressor pulley.

  8. Disconnect the electrical connectors, then detach the wiring harness retainers.

  9. Loosen the bolts, then the position the air conditioning compressor out of the way.

  10. Remove and discard the LH turbocharger exhaust flange nuts.

  14. Remove the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube from the turbocharger and position it out of the way.

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    2. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

  16. Detach the wire harness retainer, then disconnect the electrical connector.

  17. Remove the EGR tube retainers, then remove the EGR tube.

  19. Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube bolts, then remove the turbocharger oil supply tube.

      Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

      Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    2. Remove and discard the O-ring seals and the turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.

  21. Remove the turbocharger oil return tube bolts, then remove the tube.

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    2. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

    3. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

  24. Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt, then disengage the tube from the engine block.

    1. Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the engine block while removing the turbocharger.
    2. Remove the turbocharger retainers, then remove the turbocharger.

    2. If the turbocharger coolant supply tube was removed from the turbocharger, then remove and discard the O-ring seal.

  32. NOTE: If the 2 piece turbocharger cooling tubes are separated or the rubber gasket is leaking, then the rubber gasket must be replaced.

    If needed, then remove and discard the rubber gasket.

    If needed, inspect and clean the turbocharger cooling tube sealing surfaces, using brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

  34. Only if needed, remove the turbocharger elbow adapter bolts, then remove the elbow adapter.

  35. If the turbocharger elbow adapter was removed, then inspect, clean and replace the gasket as needed.
