Transmission - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    2. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    3. Refer to: Battery Tray .

  3. Disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever, remove the bracket bolts and position aside the selector lever cable and bracket.

  4. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers.

  5. Remove the nut and the ground cable.

  6. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer.

  7. Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.

  8. Remove the front subframe. Refer to: Front Subframe - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS) - I4 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) .
  9. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission. Install the drain plug.

    Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

    Vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) 

  10. Loosen the clamp and position the CAC tube aside.

  11. Disconnect the CAC hose, electrical connector and the wire retainer.

  12. Loosen the clamp, remove the nuts and the CAC tube.

  13. Remove and discard the halfshaft bracket and the nuts.

  14. Position the RH halfshaft aside and support with a length of mechanics wire.

    All wheel drive (AWD) 

  15. Remove the transfer case assembly.

    All vehicles 

  16. Using the special tools, separate the LH halfshaft from the transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 100-001 (T50T-100-A) Slide Hammer, 205-241 (T86P-3514-A) Remover, Halfshaft, 205-290 (T89P-3415-B) Remover, Halfshaft (Plate).

  17. Position the LH halfshaft aside and support with a length of mechanics wire.

  18. Disconnect the electrical connectors and wiring harness retainers.

  19. If equipped. Disconnect the transmission fluid auxiliary pump electrical connector.

  20. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers.

  21. Remove the transmission fluid warmer bracket nut.

  22. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

  23. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  24. Remove the bolts and the oil filter adapter.

  25. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  26. Remove the starter motor insulator.

  27. NOTE: Only rotate the engine in a clockwise direction or engine damage will occur.
    NOTE: Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

    Using a magnetic socket, remove and discard the torque converter nuts. Use the General Equipment: Magnetic Socket

  28. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, remove the bracket.

    If necessary, remove the bolts the roll restrictor bracket.

  29. Remove the bolts and the catalytic converter bracket.

  30. Disconnect the crankcase pressure sensor electrical connector and remove the crankcase vent tube.

  31. Remove the retainers and the RH and LH filler panels.

  32. Using the special tools, support the engine. Use Special Service Tool: 303-F072 Support Bar, Engine, 303-290B-19 Adapter for 303-290B, 303-290-05A Adapter for 303-290A.

  33. Remove the bolt and the nuts, remove the bracket and the transmission support insulator.

    1. Remove and discard the transmission fluid cooler tube bolt.
    2. Remove the bolts and support the transmission fluid warmer.

  38. Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.

  39. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.

  40. Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes. Use Special Service Tool: 307-569 Disconnect Tool TOC Line (1/2).

    All vehicles 

  42. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.

    Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  43. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.

  44. Separate the transmission from the engine and install the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.

  45. Inspect the transmission case bushing. If the surface shows signs of excessive wear or damage, replace the transmission case bushing. Refer to: Transmission Case Bushing .

  46. Inspect the LH halfshaft journal. If there is metal transfer on the journal, replace the LH halfshaft.

    1. Halfshaft journal with normal wear.
    2. Halfshaft journal with metal transfer. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH .

  47. Inspect the LH halfshaft hub for wear or damage and install a new halfshaft, if necessary.

    1. Inspect the differential seal surface.
    2. Inspect the halfshaft bushing surface. If this surface is damaged, inspect the halfshaft bushing for damage.
    3. Inspect the differential side gear splines.

  48. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. Clean the transmission-mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes by hand. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
