Pinpoint Test I : DTC U0103

  1. Refer to Module Communications Network for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The GSM and TRCM communicate on the High Speed 2 CAN. The PCM is on the High Speed 1 CAN. The GWM passes this information from HS2 CAN to HS1 CAN.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM U0103:00 Lost Communication With Gear Shift Control Module A: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets if the PCM lost communication with the GSM.

    Possible Sources 

    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, circuitry open, shorted to power or shorted to ground
    • BCM fuse 12 (7.5A)
    • GSM
    • GWM

  2. I1 VERIFY THE SCAN TOOL COMMUNICATES WITH THE GEAR SHIFT CONTROL MODULE

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, perform the network test.

    Did the GSM pass the network test? 

    Yes  GO to  I2
    No  To diagnose the module does not respond to the scan tool, REFER to: Communications Network .
  3. I2 CHECK FOR GSM (GEAR SHIFT MODULE) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    NOTE: If a GSM self-test is performed, the driver door must be closed and locked. A false P166B and/or P081F DTC sets if the driver door is opened or unlocked during the self-test.

    • Clear all DTCs.

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, perform the GSM self-test.

    Is DTC U0103 present? 

    Yes  GO to  I3
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  4. I3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCS FROM THE PCM

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM module self-test.

    Are DTCs P0562, P0563 and/or P1397 present? 

    Yes  RESOLVE those DTCs first. For 1.5L, Refer to Electronic Engine Controls . For 2.0L, REFER to: Electronic Engine Controls . For 2.5L REFER to: Electronic Engine Controls .
    No  GO to  I4
  5. I4 CHECK FOR DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) U0103 SET IN OTHER MODULES

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all DTCs.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Wait 10 seconds.

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, perform the self-test for all modules.

    • Retrieve the DTCs from all modules.

    Is DTC U0103 set in other modules on the network? 

    Yes  GO to  I5
    No  GO to  I6
  6. I5 CHECK FOR CORRECT GSM OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all GSM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the GSM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new GSM. REFER to: Gear Shift Module (GSM) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  7. I6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the PCM connector.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the PCM connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing . PERFORM the Transmission Strategy Download procedure. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
