Catalytic Converter - Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
NOTE: The police Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is not equipped with an exhaust heat exchanger. For catalytic converter service, refer to Catalytic Converter - Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) in this article.
NOTE: Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. After assembly, check the cooling system level. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding .
  3. Remove the front subframe. Refer to: Front Subframe .
  4. Disconnect the HO2S and the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.

  5. Using hose clamps pliers, clamp the hoses.

  6. Disconnect the hoses.

  7. Remove the bolts and the heat shield.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  8. NOTE: Do not excessively bend or twist the exhaust flexible pipe. Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the flexible pipe.

    Support the exhaust flexible pipe with a support wrap or suitable splint.

  9. Remove and discard the muffler and tailpipe nuts and support.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  10. Discard the muffler and tailpipe gasket.

  11. Remove the catalytic converter bracket bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  12. Remove and discard the catalytic converter nuts.

    Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

  13. Remove and discard the catalytic converter gasket and studs.

    Torque: 150 lb.in (17 Nm)
