Turbocharger LH: Removal
NOTE:
The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE:
Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant lines, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the lines to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview
- Remove the engine appearance cover retainers, then remove the engine appearance cover.
- Remove the retainers and the underbody shields.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding
- Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH
- Remove the catalytic converter LH. Refer to: Catalytic Converter LH
- If equipped, remove the bolt, then move the bracket and sensor out of the way.

NOTE: If equipped with the sensor in the previous step, only the lower heat shield bolt will need to be removed.
Remove the turbocharger heat shield bolts and then remove the turbocharger heat shield.
- Loosen the clamp, then move the left charge air cooler intake pipe out of the way.
- Detach the electrical connector retainer, then detach the electrical harness retainers from the valve cover studbolts and the valve cover.
- Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube bolts, then remove the turbocharger oil supply tube.

NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.
- Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.
Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B
- Remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seals and the turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.
- Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.
- Remove the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube and move out of the way.

- Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.
Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B
- Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal.
- Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.
- Release the turbocharger wastegate control hose clamp, then disconnect the hose.. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Remove the turbocharger oil return tube retainers, then remove the turbocharger oil return tube.

- Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.
Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B
- Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube O-ring seal.

- Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube to engine gasket.
- Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.
- Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the engine block while removing the turbocharger. Remove the turbocharger retainers, then remove the turbocharger.

- Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.

- Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal.
- Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Install new components as needed.
- Remove and discard the turbocharger gasket.
- Remove the turbocharger mounting studs if they need to be removed.
- Remove the turbocharger exhaust flange studs if they need to be removed.
