Valve Train Analysis

The following inspection is used to diagnose valve train concerns.

Valve Train Analysis - Engine Off, Valve Cover Removed 

  1. Remove the valve cover. REFER to: Valve Cover .

  2. Remove the bolts and the valve rocker arm housing.
  3. Check for damaged or severely worn parts and correct assembly. Make sure correct parts are used with the static engine analysis as follows.

    • Check for plugged oil drain back holes.
    • Check for worn or damaged valve tips.
    • Check for damaged rocker arm assemblies.
    • Check for worn or damaged camshafts.

  4. NOTE: Make sure that the rocker arms do not separate.
    NOTE: After the rocker arm assembly is installed, verify that the rocker arms are properly aligned with the camshafts and the valve stems.

    Install the valve rocker arm housing and bolts. Tighten in the sequence shown in 4 stages.

    • Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    • Stage 2: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

    • Stage 3: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    • Stage 4: 45 degrees

  5. Install the valve cover. REFER to: Valve Cover .
