Section 14 (Engine - 3.7L DURATEC (199KW/270PS)): Removal: Engine

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery - Vehicles With: Single Battery . Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect - Vehicles With: Dual Batteries .
- Remove the following items:
- Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
- Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt .
- Refer to: Cooling Module .

- Disconnect the vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Detach the vacuum hose retainer from the throttle body.
- Detach the vacuum hose retainer from the crankcase vent tube.
- Remove the bolt and position the vacuum tubes aside.
- Disconnect the fuel tube and EVAP purge valve quick release coupling and retainer. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Remove the LH headlight. Refer to: Headlamp Assembly .
- Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors and the main engine harness connector and wiring harness retainer.

- Loosen the clamps and disconnect the coolant hoses.
- If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Disconnect the heater hose quick release coupling.

- Remove the nuts and disconnect the A/C lines.
- Discard the O-ring seals.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .

- If equipped with rear A/C, remove the nut and the A/C tube.
- Discard the O-ring seal.

- Remove the nut and the A/C tube assembly.
- Discard the O-ring seal.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .

- Position the protective cover aside and remove the generator B+ terminal nut.
- Disconnect the generator electrical connector and detach wiring harness retainer.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the wiring harness conduit bolt.
- Remove the wiring harness conduit nut and position the harness aside.
- Remove the power steering pump bracket stud bolt.
- Remove the bolts and position aside and support the power steering pump and hoses.

- Disconnect the coolant hoses from the oil cooler. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

NOTE: The transmission fluid cooler tube band seal and backing rings may remain in the transmission case. Carefully remove them from the case if retained.
Remove the bolts and the transmission cooler tube assembly.
- Disconnect the LH HO2S catalyst monitor sensor and the wiring harness retainers.
- Disconnect the RH HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers, remove the bolt and feed the wiring harness under the fuel and EVAP tubes.
- Remove the bolt, the nuts and the transmission heat shield.

- Rotate the transmission electrical connector.
- Pull the transmission electrical connector out to disconnect.
- Detach the retainers and position the wiring harness aside.
- Remove the retainers and the access cover.

NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.
Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

- Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Install the oil pan drain plug.
Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

NOTE: Clean the catalytic converter-to-muffler sealing surfaces.
Remove the exhaust flange bolts and detach the exhaust hanger.
- Remove and discard the LH catalytic converter flange nuts.

NOTE: Clean the catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold sealing surfaces.
Remove and discard the RH catalytic converter flange nuts.
- Remove the lower bellhousing bolt.
- Position the catalytic converter assembly rearward and position the stand under the transmission bellhousing. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands
- Remove the upper bellhousing bolts.
- Remove the LH side bellhousing bolts and the shift cable bracket.
- Remove the RH side bellhousing bolts.
- Position the powertrain lift table under the engine crossmember and support the front of the oil pan with wood blocks. Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block
- Install the adjustable mounting arm to the LH side of the engine crossmember. Use the General Equipment: Adjustable Mounting Arm
- Install the adjustable mounting arm to the RH side of the engine crossmember. Use the General Equipment: Adjustable Mounting Arm
- Remove and discard the LH engine crossmember bracket bolts.
- Remove and discard the bolts and remove the LH engine crossmember bracket.
- Remove and discard the RH engine crossmember bracket bolts.
- Remove and discard the bolts and remove the RH engine crossmember bracket.
- Remove and discard the engine crossmember bolts.
- Separate the engine and crossmember assembly from the transmission.
- Using the powertrain lift table lower the engine from the vehicle.
- Install the LH engine lift eye. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1245 Engine Lift Eye.
- Install the engine floor crane. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

- Remove and discard the engine mount nuts.
- Using the floor crane, lift the engine from the engine crossmember. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane
