Valve Cover LH: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Installation of new spark plug seals or VCT seals is only required if seals are damaged.
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Detach the vacuum hose retainer from the throttle body.
    3. Detach the vacuum hose retainer from the crankcase vent tube.
    4. Remove the bolt and position the vacuum tubes aside.

  3. Remove the oil level indicator.

  4. Remove the crankcase vent tube.

  5. Remove the LH ignition coil-on-plugs. Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug .
    • Slide the insulator off and disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical connector.

    • Disconnect the VCT oil control solenoid electrical connectors.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  7. NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid or damage may occur.
    NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.

    Loosen the bolts and remove the valve cover.

  8. Remove and discard the valve cover gasket.

  9. NOTE: Inspect the VCT oil control solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.

    If necessary, using the special tools, remove the VCT oil control solenoid seals. Use Special Service Tool: 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone, 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  10. NOTE: Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.

    If necessary, using the special tools, remove the spark plug tube seals. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer, 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  11. Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation . Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper

    Material: Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket Remover / ZC-30-A

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B
