Pinpoint Test W : The Low Fuel Indicator Is Never Or Always On
- Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
If the fuel level status message is missing for less than 33 seconds, the IPC defaults the low fuel indicator to its last state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received.
If the fuel level status message is missing for 33 seconds or longer, the IPC sets DTC U0140:00 in continuous memory, defaults fuel gauge to empty (E) and the low fuel indicator on.

Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
- Before beginning diagnostics, verify the following:
- If the low fuel indicator is never on, the fuel level is less than 12 L (3.2 gal).
- If the low fuel indicator is always on, the fuel level is above 12 L (3.2 gal).
- An administrator key is used NOT a MyKey®.
- W1 CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Monitor the fuel gauge operation.
Does the fuel gauge operate correctly?
Yes GO to W2 No GO to Pinpoint Test B - W2 CARRY OUT THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
- Select the IPC low fuel indicator (LOFUELL) PID.
- Command the low fuel indicator lamp on then off while observing the low fuel indicator.
Does the low fuel indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes The system is operating correctly. The fuel level may not have been at the level required to turn the low fuel indicator on or off. No Refer to IPC Guided Routine Testing .
