Pinpoint Test U : The LH (Left-Hand) - RH (Right-Hand) Turn Signal Or High Beam Indicator Is Never Or Always On

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    If the turn indicator command or headlamp high beam indicator request message is missing for less than 2 seconds, the IPC defaults the turn signal or high beam indicator to its last state (on or off), based upon the last known good message received.

    If the turn indicator command or headlamp high beam indicator request message is missing for 2 seconds or longer, the IPC sets DTC U0140:00 in continuous memory and defaults the turn signal or high beam indicator off.

    Possible Sources 

    • Turn signal concern
    • High beam concern
    • BCM
    • IPC

  2. U1 DETERMINE THE FAULT CONDITION

    • Ignition ON.

    • Check the operation of the turn signal or high beams.

    Do the turn signals or high beams operate correctly? 

    Yes  GO to  U2
    No  REFER to: Turn Signal and Hazard Lamps . REFER to: Headlamps .

  3. U2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: IPC .
    No  For the LH- RH turn signal indicators, GO to  U3 For the high beam indicator, GO to  U4

  4. U3 CARRY OUT THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) LH (LEFT-HAND) - RH (RIGHT-HAND) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • Select the IPC LH (LH_TURN_L) or RH (RH_TURN_L) indicator PID.

    • Command the LH or RH indicator on then off while observing the LH or RH indicator.

    Does the LH or RH indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE any BCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  Refer to IPC Guided Routine Testing .

  5. U4 CARRY OUT THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) HIGH BEAM INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • Select the IPC high beam indicator (HIGH_BEAM) PID.

    • Command the high beam indicator on then off while observing the high beam indicator.

    Does the high beam indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE any BCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  Refer to IPC Guided Routine Testing .
