Pinpoint Test C : The Speedometer Is Inoperative

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See Speedometer. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .

    If the IPC operating voltage is above 16 volts or below 9 volts for one second or longer, the IPC defaults the speedometer to 0 km/h (0 mph)

    If the BCM does not receive the vehicle speed message from the PCM, the BCM sets DTC U0100:00.

    If the IPC does not receive the vehicle speed message from the BCM for longer than 2 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0140:00 and defaults the speedometer to 0 km/h (0 mph).

    Possible Sources 

    • BCM concern
    • PCM concern
    • ABS concern
    • IPC

  2. C1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: IPC .
    No  GO to  C2

  3. C2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  GO to  C3

  4. C3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the ABS module self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to: Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) And Stability Control .
    No  GO to  C4

  5. C4 CARRY OUT THE SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • NOTE: Make sure to set the diagnostic scan tool to 0 or full cold before beginning this step.

      Select the IPC speedometer (SPDOMETER) PID.

    • Command the speedometer on and off while monitoring the speedometer.

    Does the speed begin at 0 km/h (0 mph), move to 193 km/h (120 mph) and return to 0 km/h (0 mph)? 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE any PCM concerns. Refer to the appropriate Engine article for the procedure.
    No  Refer to IPC Guided Routine Testing .
