Pinpoint Test J : U0101:87

  1. Refer to Module Communications Network for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The PAM communicates with the TCM through the HS-CAN.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PAM U0101:87 Lost Communication with TCM: Missing Message Sets in continuous memory in the PAM when expected messages from the PCM (gasoline engines) or the TCM (diesel engine) are not received for 0.5 seconds or more.

    Possible Sources 

    • Communication concern
    • PCM (gasoline engines)
    • TCM (diesel engines)
    • PAM

  2. J1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN

    • Ignition ON.

    • Verify that there is an observable symptom present.

    Is an observable symptom present? 

    Yes  GO to  J2
    No  CLEAR the DTC. The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  3. J2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform a network test.

    Does the PCM and TCM pass the network test? 

    Yes  For gasoline engines, GO to  J3 For diesel engines, GO to  J4
    No  REFER to: Communications Network .
  4. J3 RETRIEVE THE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) KOEO (KEY ON, ENGINE OFF) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM KOEO self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  Refer to the appropriate Engine article for the procedure.
    No  GO to  J5
  5. J4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the TCM self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present? 

    Yes  Refer to the appropriate Automatic Transmission article for the procedure.
    No  GO to  J5
  6. J5 RECHECK THE PAM (PARKING ASSIST CONTROL MODULE) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the PAM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Operate the system and test for normal operation.

    • Check the PAM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present? 

    Yes  If DTC U0101:87 is still present, GO to  J6 For all other Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), REFER to PAM DTC Chart .
    No  CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  7. J6 CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) U0101:00 OR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) U0101:87 IN OTHER MODULES

    • Using a scan tool, clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Wait 10 seconds.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Wait 10 seconds.

    • Using a scan tool, retrieve the continuous memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from all modules.

    Is DTC U0101:00 or DTC U0101:87 set in any other module(s)? 

    Yes  For gasoline engines, GO to  J7 For diesel engines, GO to  J8
    No  GO to  J9
  8. J7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the PCM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the PCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  9. J8 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the TCM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the TCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new TCM. Refer to the appropriate Automatic Transmission article for the procedure.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  10. J9 CHECK FOR CORRECT PAM (PARKING ASSIST CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all PAM connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the PAM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new PAM. REFER to: Parking Assist Control Module (PAM) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
