Cylinder Head: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Remove the cowl panel. Refer to: Cowl Panel .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. NOTE: The oil drain plug with O-ring seal is to be reused unless damaged.

    Drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    Torque: 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

  6. Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

  7. Remove the HO2S. Refer to: Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) .
  8. Disconnect the Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connector and wire retainers.

  9. Remove the bolts and position aside the exhaust manifold heat shield.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  10. Remove the bolts for the exhaust manifold bracket.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  11. NOTE: Make sure that the exhaust flexible pipe is not forcibly bent or twisted.

    Support the exhaust flex connector. Install the General Equipment: Cable Ties

  12. Remove and discard the nuts. Position back the exhaust system and support as needed.

  13. Remove and discard the exhaust system gasket.

  14. Remove the bolts for the exhaust manifold.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  15. Remove and discard the nuts. Position back the exhaust manifold.

  16. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.

  17. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold studs.

  18. Disconnect the EGR electrical connector.

  19. Position aside the coolant hose clip.

  20. Disconnect the coolant hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  21. Disconnect the EGR valve coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  22. Disconnect the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  23. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
    2. Remove the fuel rail. Refer to: Fuel Rail .
    3. Remove the camshafts. Refer to: Camshafts .

  24. NOTE: If the camshafts and valve tappets are to be reused, mark the location of the valve tappets to make sure they are assembled in their original positions.
    NOTE: The number on the valve tappets only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 3.650 mm.

    Remove the valve tappets.

  25. Inspect the valve tappets.

  26. Remove the EGR tube.

    Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

  27. Remove the bolts and the cylinder head. Discard the bolts.

  28. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
