Power Transfer Unit (PTU) - 3.5L GTDI: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to Jacking And Lifting .
  2. General equipment: Steering wheel holder.

  3. If equipped, release the retainers and remove the underbody shield.

  4. If equipped with PTU cooling, drain the cooling system. Refer to Engine Cooling .
  5. Remove the intermediate shaft. Refer to Front Drive Halfshafts .
  6. Remove the RH catalytic converter. Refer to Exhaust System .
  7. Index-mark the driveshaft. Remove and discard the front driveshaft bolts and position the driveshaft aside.

  8. NOTE: Do not allow the intermediate shaft to rotate while it is disconnected from the gear or damage to the clockspring may occur. If there is evidence that the intermediate shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System .

    Remove and discard the steering coupler through bolt and disconnect the steering shaft.

  9. Remove the steering gear shield retainer and position the steering gear shield aside.

  10. Remove the steering gear harness bolt.

  11. Remove the steering gear harness push pin and disconnect the steering gear harness.

  12. Remove and discard the LH exhaust flexible pipe-to-underbody catalytic converter nuts. Position the LH exhaust flexible pipe aside.

  13. Remove the bolts and the RH turbocharger lower bracket.

  14. Remove the PTU support bracket bolts and the PTU support bracket.

  15. Remove the rear roll restrictor bracket bolts and the rear roll restrictor bracket. Loosen the roll restrictor through bolt and position the roll restrictor aside.

  16. General equipment: Jackstand. Support the Front subframe.

  17. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

    Remove and discard the rear bolts of the front subframe.

    Remove the front subframe support bracket bolts and the front subframe support brackets.

  19. Remove the front roll restrictor bracket bolts. Loosen the front subframe roll restrictor through bolt and position the front roll restrictor aside.

  20. General equipment: Jackstand. Lower the rear of the front subframe.

  21. If equipped with PTU cooling system. Disconnect the PTU temperature sensor.

  22. If equipped with PTU cooling system. Remove the PTU cooler line bolt and position the PTU cooler lines aside.

  23. NOTE: The PTU vent hose should be replaced whenever a new PTU is installed.

    Disconnect the PTU vent hose.

  24. Remove the PTU bolts and the PTU.

    1. Remove the intermediate shaft side PTU bolts.
    2. Remove the transmission side PTU bolts.
    3. With the help of a assistant to rotate the engine, remove the PTU.

  25. Remove and discard the PTU compression seal.
