Muffler and Tailpipe: Removal

NOTE: The production muffler and tailpipe assembly is one-piece construction. The service muffler and tailpipe is 3-piece construction and have different service section cut positions. It is necessary to cut the production exhaust system to enable the service section(s) to be fitted. Before cutting any part of the exhaust system, check that the position of the cut is correct in comparison to the service sections to be installed.
NOTE: Service section part(s) will use service section clamp for assembly.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. NOTE: No need to spot weld the bracket to the clamp after installation.

    If the bracket and the clamp is spot welded. Cut the spot weld to remove the clamp.

  3. Remove the retainers and the front crossmember brace.

  4. NOTE: Align the new muffler and tailpipe component with the old muffler and tailpipe assembly to accurately mark the location to cut. Failure to cut the muffler and tailpipe in the correct location can result in an NVH concern or replacement of the entire muffler and tailpipe assembly.

    Partial replacement. Cut the resonator from the muffler and tailpipe assembly where shown.

  5. Detach the exhaust isolators and remove the rear muffler.

  6. Remove and discard catalytic converter flange clamp.

  7. Detach the exhaust isolator and remove the front muffler.
