Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub - Vehicles With: Rear Drum Brakes: Removal

NOTE: Suspension fasteners are critical parts that affect the performance of vital components and systems. Failure of these fasteners may result in major service expense. Use the same or equivalent parts if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Tighten fasteners as specified.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Loosen the wheel hub nut.

  2. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  3. Remove the spring. Refer to: Spring  .
  4. NOTE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, otherwise incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur.
    NOTE: Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

    Remove and discard the upper arm to wheel knuckle nut.

    Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) Stage 2: 90 deg.

  5. NOTE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, otherwise incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur.
    NOTE: Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

    Remove and discard the lower arm to wheel knuckle nut.

    Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) Stage 2: 90 deg.

  6. Remove and discard the wheel hub nut.

  7. Remove the brake shoes.
  8. Using a screwdriver, bend the cable union tab upward and then disconnect the front cable from the union. Use the General Equipment: Flat-Bladed Screwdriver

  9. Detach the front parking brake cable.

  10. Remove the bolt and position aside the parking brake cable.

    Torque: 25 lb.in (2.8 Nm)

  11. Remove the retainer and position aside the rear wheel speed sensor and brake hose.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  12. Install the special tool and press the halfshaft from the rear wheel bearing and wheel hub. Use Special Service Tool: 205-D070 (D93P-1175-B) Remover, Front Wheel Hub.

    1. Remove and discard the rear stabilizer link upper nut.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    2. Remove and discard the rear shock absorber lower nut and bolt.

      Torque: 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

    3. Remove the wheel knuckle mounting retainers and remove the wheel knuckle.

      Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) Stage 2: 92 lb.ft (125 Nm)

  13. Remove the wheel bearing and wheel hub. Use the General Equipment: Hydraulic Press Use the General Equipment: Bearing Separator

  14. Inspect the wheel bearing and wheel hub flange for corrosion or damage. Replace as necessary.

  15. Remove and discard the retaining circlip.

  16. Remove the wheel hub and bearing. Use Special Service Tool: 308-643 Installer, Input Shaft Seal., 204-348/3 Remover/Installer, Wheel Hub/Wheel Bearing. Use the General Equipment: Hydraulic Press
