Crankshaft Pulley: Removal

NOTE:
Do not loosen or remove the crankshaft pulley bolt without first installing the special tools. The crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft timing sprocket are not keyed to the crankshaft. Before any repair requiring loosening or removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt, the crankshaft and camshafts must be locked in place by the special service tools, otherwise severe engine damage can occur.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Disconnect the vacuum pump tube coupling.

NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
- Remove the nuts.
- Disconnect quick release couplings. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Disconnect the vacuum tube. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
- Loosen the air cleaner outlet pipe clamps and remove the air outlet pipe.
- Detach the retainers and position the harness aside.

NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
- Disconnect the fuel evaporative tube quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Remove the bolt.
- Loosen the clamps and remove the CAC outlet pipe.
- Remove the following items:
- The RH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
- Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt .
- Refer to: Starter Motor .

NOTE: Make sure that no strain is placed on the refrigerant lines.
If equipped, remove the bolt and the refrigerant line retainer.

- Disconnect the throttle actuator and VCT solenoid electrical connectors.
- Remove and discard the VCT solenoid bolts.
- Remove the VCT solenoids.

NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
- Rotate the crankshaft until piston No. 1 is approximately 35 deg. BTDC.
- Verify the VCT units are in the position shown.
- If the VCT units are not in the position shown, rotate the crankshaft clockwise one complete revolution.
- Remove the engine plug bolt.
- Install Special Service Tool: 303-1604 Timing Peg, Crankshaft TDC.

NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
Rotate the crankshaft slowly until the crankshaft stops.
- Install Special Service Tool: 303-1606 Locking Tool, Variable Camshaft Timing.
Torque 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

- Turn until resistance is felt.
- Torque
133 lb.in (15 Nm)
- Remove the bolts and the heat shield.
- Discard the bolts.
- Remove the plug bolt from the oil pan.

NOTE: The drill bit must be installed to maintain the balance shaft timing. Do not remove the drill bit until you are instructed to do so.NOTE: Exhaust and A/C compressor removed from graphic for clarity.
Install a 6 mm drill bit into the oil pan hole, through the oil pump housing and into the balance shaft.
- Install Special Service Tool: 303-1602 Locking Tool, Crankshaft.
- Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retainer and the oil pump control solenoid.

- M8x25 Install Special Service Tool: 303-1611-02 Adapter for 303-1611, Torque Multiplier.
Torque 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)
- Install Special Service Tool: 303-1611-01 Adapter for 303-1611.
Torque 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)
- Only tighten the nut finger tight at this stage. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1611 Torque Multiplier.
- Loosen: : 5 turn(s)
- Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1611 Torque Multiplier.

- Remove and discard the crankshaft bolt.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley.

NOTE: The production engine is not equipped with a friction washer. Whenever the crankshaft pulley is removed, a friction washer (base part number 6378) must be installed.
If equipped, remove and discard the friction washer.
