Transmission - 1.5L Duratec (90kW/120PS) - I3: Installation

  1. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, install the manual shift lever.

    Install the manual shift lever and the nut.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  2. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, install the transmission vent tube.

    Install the transmission vent tube.

  3. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, install the transmission insulator bracket.

    Install the transmission insulator support bracket and the bolts.

    Torque

    : 46 lb.ft (62 Nm)

  4. NOTE: If removed, inspect the transmission mounted fluid cooler tube backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary.

    1. Install the backing ring (7J324)
    2. Lubricate and install the seal (7D258)

      Material

      : Motorcraft® MERCON® ULV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-12-QULV (WSS-M2C949-A,) (MERCON® ULV)

  5. Install the transmission cooler tubes and bypass valve. Install new bolts and nut.

    1. Torque

      : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Torque

      : 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  6. Install Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.

  7. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with Multi-Purpose Grease.

    Material

    : Motorcraft® Multi-Purpose Grease Spray / XL-5-A (ESB-M1C93-B)

  8. NOTE: If the transmission is not positioned on the dowel pins, damage to the transmission may occur.

    If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

  9. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
    NOTE: Make sure that the component is correctly located on the locating dowels.
    NOTE: Make sure that no part of the wiring harness is trapped.
    NOTE: Make sure that no components catch.

    Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Retaining Strap. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  10. Position the transmission behind the engine and remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.

  11. Align the index-mark made during removal.

  12. Install the transmission-to-engine bolt and studbolt.

    Torque

    : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  13. Install the transmission-to-engine bolts and studbolts.

    Torque

    : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  14. Install the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque

    : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  15. NOTE: Only rotate the engine in a clockwise direction or engine damage will occur.
    NOTE: The torque converter nuts are accessed from the top of the vehicle.

    Using a magnetic socket install the new torque converter nuts. Use the General Equipment: Magnetic Socket

    Torque

    : 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  16. Install the starter motor insulator.

  17. Install the starter motor.
  18. Attach the transmission vent tube to the coolant hose.

  22. Install the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket bolt.

    Torque

    : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  23. Install the transmission support insulator, the bolts and the nuts.

    Torque

    : 1: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm) 2: 103 lb.ft (140 Nm)

  24. NOTE: Make sure that a new component is installed.

    Install the new inner halfshaft retaining circlip.

  25. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    If necessary, install a new RH halfshaft seal. Refer to: Halfshaft Seal RH .

  26. Insert the RH halfshaft until the halfshaft retaining clip is fully seated.

  27. NOTE: Make sure that a new component is installed.

    Insert the RH lower ball joint into the wheel knuckle and install a new bolt and nut.

    Torque

    : 38 lb.ft (52 Nm)

  28. WARNING: WARNING: Make sure that the alignment line is not twisted.

    • Position back the RH front wheel speed sensor and install the bolt.

      Torque

      : 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

    • Attach the wheel speed sensor retainer.

  29. WARNING: WARNING: Make sure that no load is placed on the brake hose.

    Position the RH brake hose and install the bolt.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  30. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    Install the LH halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6F15 .

  31. Install the wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  32. Install the transmission roll restrictor bracket and the bolts.

    Torque

    : 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

  34. Position back the wiring harnesses and connect the transmission main control connector.

  35. Install the ground strap and the bolt.

    Torque

  36. Position back the selector lever cable and bracket, install the bolts. Connect the selector lever cable end to the manual control lever.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  37. Install the battery support bracket and the nuts. Install the wiring harness push pin retainers.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  38. Install the cowl panel. Refer to: Cowl Panel Grille .
  39. Install the air cleaner.
  40. Install the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray .
  41. Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6F35 .
  42. Fill the transmission with transmission fluid. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill .
  43. After completing the repairs perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure.
  44. If a new solenoid body is installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download
