Muffler and Tailpipe: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: Do not excessively bend, twist or allow the exhaust to hang from the flexible joint or damage to the exhaust system may occur.
NOTE: Do not use oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators. They may cause deterioration of the rubber.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
NOTE: Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
    1. Convertible top vehicles only, remove the retainers and the brace.

      Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

    2. During assembly, clean the retainers and apply the thread lock.

      Material: Motorcraft® Threadlock and Sealer / TA-25-B

  2. Loosen the clamp and separate the front muffler and tailpipe from the catalytic converter.

    1. Remove the LH and RH rear exhaust hanger isolator bracket bolts from the rear subframe.

      Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

    2. Unhook the rear exhaust hanger isolators and remove the muffler and tailpipe.

  3. Partial replacement. Carefully cut the muffler and tailpipe where shown. Discard the pipe mounted heat shields and detach the exhaust isolator hangers. Remove the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Use the General Equipment: Air Body Saw
