Engine Oil Draining and Filling

Oil Drain Equipment

Draining

All vehicles

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
Remove the retainer and the access cover.

Vehicles with spin-on oil filters
Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

Vehicles with cartridge oil filters
1. Loosen the oil filter housing and allow the oil to drain. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
2. Remove the oil filter housing.

NOTE: Make sure all of the oil filter element components are removed from the oil filter housing and the oil filter adapter.
1. Remove and discard the oil filter element.
2. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

All vehicles
NOTE: The drain plug should be removed and installed by hand, do not use tools.
1. Turn the oil drain plug by hand counterclockwise 120 degrees. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
2. Pull the oil drain plug out of the oil pan.
3. After the oil has drained, push the oil drain plug into the oil pan.
4. NOTE: Overtightening will damage the oil drain plug and possibly the oil pan.
  
  Turn the oil drain plug by hand clockwise 120 degrees.

Filling

Vehicles with spin-on oil filters

Lubricate the O-ring seal of the new oil filter with clean engine oil.

- Install the new oil filter.
- Using an oil filter cap wrench and a torque wrench, tighten the oil filter to specification.
  Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

Vehicles with cartridge oil filters
1. Wipe the threads and O-ring sealing surfaces with a clean lint-free cloth.
2. Inspect the oil filter housing and stem for damage including cracks or separation of the stem from the housing. If damaged, a new oil filter housing assembly must be installed.

1. NOTE: Failure to install new oil filter housing O-ring seals may result in oil leakage.
  
  NOTE: The smallest O-ring seal that comes with the oil filter is not used for this application.
  
  Install new oil filter housing O-ring seals and lubricate with clean engine oil.
2. Install a new oil filter element

Install the oil filter housing.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

Install the access cover and the retainer.

Fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .
