Disassembly And Assembly Of Subassemblies: Piston: Assembly

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
    1. Identification mark for LH or RH piston.
    2. Arrow on the top of the dome of the piston should be facing toward the front of the engine block
    3. Bump on connecting rod should be facing toward the front of the engine block

  1. Position the piston on the connecting rod.

  2. Lubricate and install the piston pin.

    Material: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil / XO-5W50-QGT (WSS-M2C931-C)

  3. NOTE: The piston pin retainer gap orientation must be toward the bottom of the piston.

    Install the piston pin retainers.

  4. Lubricate and install the oil control rings.

    1. Lower oil control ring.

      Material: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil / XO-5W50-QGT (WSS-M2C931-C)

    2. Oil control expander ring.
    3. Upper oil control ring.

  5. Install the lower compression ring.

    1. The identification mark on the ring pointing up toward the top of the piston.
    2. Hook feature will point down toward the bottom of piston.

      Material: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil / XO-5W50-QGT (WSS-M2C931-C)

  6. Install the upper compression ring.

    1. The identification mark on the ring pointing up toward the top of the piston.

      Material: Motorcraft® SAE 5W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil / XO-5W50-QGT (WSS-M2C931-C)

  7. Position the piston ring gaps.

    1. Upper compression ring gap.
    2. Lower compression ring gap.
    3. Upper oil control ring gap.
    4. Oil control expander ring gap (Center line of the piston parallel to the wrist pin bore).
    5. Lower oil control ring gap.
