Turbocharger LH: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Ford Edge. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Whenever the turbocharger air intake system components are removed, always cover the open ports to protect them from debris. It is important that no foreign material enter the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes are susceptible to damage from even small particles. All of the components should be inspected and cleaned, if needed, prior to installation or reassembly.
NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant lines, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the lines to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the engine appearance cover retainers and then remove the engine appearance cover.

  3. Remove the retainers and the underbody shields.

  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
  6. Remove the catalytic converter LH. Refer to: Catalytic Converter LH .
  7. Remove the TC heat shield bolts and then remove the TC heat shield.

  8. Loosen the clamps and then remove the LH - CAC intake pipe.

  9. Detach the electrical connector retainer and then detach the electrical harness retainers from the valve cover studbolts and the valve cover.

  10. Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube bolts, then remove the turbocharger oil supply tube.

  11. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seals and the turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.

  12. Remove the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube and position out of the way.

  13. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal.

  14. Release the turbocharger wastegate control hose clamp and then disconnect the hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  15. Remove the turbocharger oil return tube retainers, then remove the turbocharger oil return tube.

  16. NOTE: Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
    NOTE: Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube O-ring seal.

  17. Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube tube-to-engine block gasket.

  19. NOTE: Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the engine block while removing the turbocharger.

    Remove the turbocharger retainers and then remove the turbocharger.
