High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Removal

WARNING: Do not work on the fuel system until the pressure has been released and the engine has cooled. Fuel in the high-pressure fuel system is hot and under very high pressure. High-pressure fuel may cause cuts and contact with hot fuel may cause burns. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
WARNING: Clean all fuel residue from the engine compartment. If not removed, fuel residue may ignite when the engine is returned to operation. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE: Do not loosen any fittings or plugs on the high-pressure fuel pump.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.

    1. Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
    2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
  6. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

  7. NOTE: When removing or installing the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator.

  8. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump fuel feed tube quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  9. Remove the evaporative emission canister purge valve retaining nuts from the evaporative emission canister purge valve mounting bracket and then move the evaporative emission canister purge valve and bracket out of the way.

  10. Remove the high-pressure fuel tube nut and bolt.

  11. NOTE: To release the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel tube, wrap the high-pressure fuel pump flare nut with a shop towel to absorb any residual fuel pressure during the loosening of high-pressure fuel pump flare nut.

    Loosen the flare nuts, remove and discard the high-pressure fuel tube.

  12. Disconnect the harness retainers from the high-pressure fuel pump bracket.

  13. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump bracket bolts and the high-pressure fuel pump bracket.

  14. NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts one complete revolution at a time.

    • Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump bolts.

    • Remove the high-pressure fuel pump.

  15. Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.
