Oil Pan: Installation

LHD AWD/LHD FWD 

NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
  1. Apply a 5.5 mm (0.21 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 crankshaft engine front cover-to-cylinder block joint areas.

    Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  2. NOTE: The oil pan and the 4 specified bolts must be installed and the oil pan aligned to the cylinder block within 4 minutes of sealant application. Final tightening of the oil pan bolts must be carried out within 60 minutes of sealant application.

    Apply a 3 mm (0.11 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the sealing surface of the oil pan.

    Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  3. Apply a 5.5 mm (0.21 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 crankshaft seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block joint areas on the sealing surface of the oil pan.

    Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  4. NOTE: The oil pan and the 4 specified bolts must be installed within 4 minutes of the start of sealant application.
    NOTE: Keep the oil pan as close as possible to the transmission while installing, then slide forward towards the engine front cover to prevent wiping off of the sealant.

    Install the oil pan and the bolts finger tight.

  5. NOTE: Do not torque at this time.

    Draw the bellhousing up to the engine by tightening the LH bellhousing-to-engine bolt.

    Draw the bellhousing up to the engine by tightening the RH engine-to-bellhousing bolt.

  7. NOTE: Do not torque at this time.

    Install the LH catalytic converter bracket and the oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts.

    Install the A/C compressor bolt finger tight.

  9. Tighten the oil pan bolts in the sequence shown.

    Torque: 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

  10. Install the engine front cover bolts finger tight.

  11. Install the remaining bolts and tighten in the sequence shown.

    Torque: Stage 1: Tighten bolts 1-9 and 11-14 to: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm) Stage 2: Tighten bolt 10 to: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) Stage 3: Tighten bolt 10 an additional: 90 deg. Stage 4: Tighten bolts 15 and 16 to: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  12. Tighten the engine front cover bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  13. Tighten the A/C compressor bolt.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  14. Tighten the oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  15. Install the nuts for the LH catalytic converter bracket.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

    Tighten the RH engine-to-bellhousing bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  17. Tighten the LH bellhousing-to-engine bolts.

  18. Install the inspection cover and the retainers.

    LHD AWD 

    1. Install the PTU bracket and hand start the bolts at the PTU.
    2. Install the bolts at the cylinder block.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    3. Tighten the bolts at the PTU.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  19. Install the following items:

    1. Install the RH wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
    2. Install the RH catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter RH .

    LHD AWD/LHD FWD 

  20. NOTE: Do not lubricate the engine oil filter gasket.

    Install a new engine oil filter.

    Torque: Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm) Stage 2: 180 deg.

  21. Install the following items:

    1. Install the roll restrictor. Refer to: Roll Restrictor RH - 3.5L Duratec (212kW/278PS) .
    2. Install the exhaust Y-pipe. Refer to: Exhaust Y-Pipe .

  22. Install the splash shields and the retainers.

  23. Tighten the upper bellhousing-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    • Install the starter stud bolt.

      Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

    • Position back the engine wire harness and connect the retainers.

  24. Install the oil level indicator.

  25. Install the following items:

    1. Install the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray .
    2. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    3. Install the air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .

  26. NOTE: Do not expose the Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to engine oil for at least 90 minutes after installing the oil pan. Failure to follow these instructions may cause engine oil leakage.

    Fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

    Material: Engine Oil - SAE 5W-20 - Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-Q1SP (WSS-M2C945-B1)
