Valve Cover: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.

    1. Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
    2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

  3. Remove the oil level indicator.

  4. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector, wiring harness retainer and remove the crankcase vent tube.

  6. Remove the retainers and the underbody shield.

    • Release the clamp and disconnect the CAC bypass hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    • Loosen the turbocharger inlet pipe clamp.

    • Remove the engine appearance cover stud.

    • Remove the bolt and the turbocharger inlet pipe.

  8. Remove the ignition coil-on-plugs. Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug .
  9. Disconnect the MAPT sensor electrical connector.

    • Disconnect the VCT oil control solenoid electrical connectors.

    • Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connectors.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  11. Detach the PCM wiring harness retainer from the engine mount stud.

  12. Remove the bolt and the exhaust CMP sensor.

  13. Disconnect the vacuum tubes at the brake vacuum pump.

    • Detach the CHT wiring harness retainer.

    • Detach the turbocharger control valve vacuum tube retainers and position aside.

  15. Loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.

  16. Remove and discard the valve cover gasket.

  17. NOTE: The VCT solenoid seals should only be replaced if they are damaged.

    Inspect the VCT oil control solenoid seals for damaged. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.

  18. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
