Side Airbag: Removal

WARNING: The following procedure prescribes critical repair steps required for correct restraint system operation during a crash. Follow all notes and steps carefully. Failure to follow step instructions may result in incorrect operation of the restraint system and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
WARNING: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side airbags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side airbag deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

All seats 

  1. Remove the front seat. Refer to: Front Seat .
    1. Release the locking tab(s) and disconnect the wire harness electrical connector(s).
    2. Detach the wire harness connector retainer(s) from the seat track.
    3. Detach the wire harness retainer(s) from the seat track and position the wire harness(es) aside.

  2. NOTE: Seat backrest blower motor with snorkel shown.
    NOTE: Follow the unique instructions or graphics for this step in the installation for backrest blower motor snorkel routing.

    1. Detach the backrest cover straps.
    2. If equipped. Route the backrest cover straps through the backrest blower motor snorkel.
    3. Position the backrest cover upward.

    Manual driver seat 

  4. Adjust the manual lumbar to the fully relaxed position.

  5. Remove the height adjusting handle.

    1. Raise the height adjusting handle.
    2. Release the locking tab.
    3. Slide the height adjusting handle forward.

    1. Remove the clip and the recline handle.
    2. Remove the clip and the manual lumbar knob.

  6. Remove the side shield screws.

  7. Remove the side shield.

    1. Firmly grasp the side shield, lift up and out, separating the side shield from the recliner bracket.
    2. Slide the side shield forward.
    3. Lift up on the front of the side shield and slide the side shield from the height adjusting handle lever.

  8. Position the manual lumbar assembly cable away from the seat track.

    • Disconnect the cable from the manual lumbar actuator.

    • Detach the cable retainers from the seat track.

  9. Route the manual lumbar cable through the backrest cover opening.

    All seats 

  10. NOTE: Power seat shown, manual seat similar.

    Route the backrest wire harness(es) through the backrest cover opening(s).

  11. Remove the backrest cover pin-type retainers.

  12. NOTE: Use care when separating the seat backrest trim cover from the hook-and-loop strips or the hook-and-loop strips may be torn from the seat backrest foam.

    Partially invert the backrest cover enough to access the side airbag deployment chute retainer.

    1. Release the hook and loop strips.
    2. Invert the backrest cover.

  13. Release the side airbag deployment chute retainer and position the chute through the backrest foam opening.

    Seats without climate control 

  15. NOTE: Use care when separating the seat backrest trim cover from the hook-and-loop strips or the hook-and-loop strips may be torn from the seat backrest foam.

    Partially invert the backrest cover to the hog rings.

    1. Release the hook and loop strips.
    2. Invert the backrest cover.

    Seats with climate control

    Remove the hog rings.

  17. NOTE: Use care when separating the seat backrest trim cover from the hook-and-loop strips or the hook-and-loop strips may be torn from the seat backrest foam.

    Partially invert the backrest cover enough to access the upper hog rings.

    1. Release the hook and loop strips.
    2. Invert the backrest cover.

    All seats 

  18. Remove the side airbag nuts.

    Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

    1. Detach the side airbag studs from the backrest frame and position the side airbag out of the backrest foam pad pocket.
    2. Disconnect the side airbag electrical connector.
    3. Remove the side airbag.
