Turbocharger RH: Removal

All Vehicles 

NOTE: Whenever the turbocharger air intake system components are removed, always cover the open ports to protect them from debris. It is important that no foreign material enter the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes are susceptible to damage from even small particles. All of the components should be inspected and cleaned, if needed, prior to installation or reassembly.
NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant lines, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the lines to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  3. Remove the front Wheels and Tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  4. Remove the underbody shield retainers and then remove the underbody shield.

  5. Remove the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensor. Refer to: Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensor .
  6. Remove the turbocharger heat shield retainers and then remove the heat shield.

  7. Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube bolts and then remove the turbocharger oil supply tube.

  8. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seals and the turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.

  9. Remove the right catalytic converter to transmission bracket bolts.

  10. Remove and discard the right catalytic converter nuts, then position the right catalytic converter out of the way.

  12. Remove the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube and position out of the way.

  13. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal.

  14. Release the clamp and then disconnect the turbocharger wastegate control hose.

    Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    15. AWD (All Wheel Drive) Vehicles 

  15. Remove the right front halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft RH .
  16. Remove the PTU support bracket bolts, then remove the bracket.

    17. All Vehicles 

    NOTE: AWD (all-wheel drive) is displayed, FWD (front wheel drive) is similar.
  17. Remove the turbocharger oil return tube retainers and then remove the turbocharger oil return tube.

  18. NOTE: Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
    NOTE: Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube O-ring seal.

  19. Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube tube-to-engine block gasket.

    Remove the left side and the right side upper stabilizer bar nuts, then position the stabilizer bar up all of the way.

    • Remove the turbocharger mounting studs.
    • Remove the turbocharger mounting bolt, then remove the turbocharger and gasket.

    NOTE: Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the engine block while removing the turbocharger.
